Hardy Girls/Maine events

Postby oneangrygirl » Thu Jul 12, 2007 9:18 am

No idea why i'm on their mailing list, as all their events are in Maine and I don't live in Maine. However if you do, or have a friend who does, this may be useful. They seem to do good stuff.

Girls Rock!

This great film documents girls ranging from 8 to 18 at a girls rock and
roll camp in Portland, Oregon. They're taught that it's fine to sweat like a pig,
scream like a banshee, wail on their instruments with complete and utter abandon, and that "it is 100% okay to be exactly who you are." We
love that, so Hardy Girls Healthy Women is sponsoring the film
at this year's Maine International Film Festival.

We invite you to join us in celebrating girls as the film follows girls
who have a week to select a band, an instrument they may have never played before, and to write a song to perform. What happens to the girls as
they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform is truly moving and revolutionary. This film is
also brought to you by Waterville's own Shadow Distribution.

The film will show at 9:30 pm on Friday July 13th at the Waterville Opera House,on Sunday July 15th at 3:30 pm at Railroad Square Cinema, and also on Friday July 20th at 9:30 pm at the Railroad Square Cinema. Come out and see
some

MIFF Fireflies bring us some Fabulous Films!

Two films highlighting the lives of girls will kick off Fireflies, the young peoplesprogram of theMaine International Film Festival. Amal, a short film made in France and Morocco, and Candy House, a feature-length film from India, both portray girls whose dreams collide with their families'
needs.

The two films will be shown at theWaterville Opera House on Saturday, July 14, at 12:30pm. A panel discussion will follow with our very own Megan Williams, Jennifer THron (a Colby professor), and Prisna Dixit, a Colby College student from Kathmandu, Nepal. Miranda Ring Phelps (child/family psychologist and co-director of Fireflies) will facilitate the discussion and a reception with Indian food will follow. The age range suggested for this
event is 10 and older. Please join us for some great films and some fascinating conversation!

Tickets for Fireflies films are $5 at the door, ten ticket
passes are $40 and available at Railroad Square Cinema, and scholarship tickets are
also available, inquire about them at the Alfond Youth Center
(873-0684) and the Children's Book Cellar (872-4543). Schedules for the Fireflies
films will be at the above locations as well as in the MIFF
program or on the web at http://www.miff.org/
(http://e2ma.net/go/655343015/549134/188 ... .miff.org/).

As for exciting summer events, we'd also like to let you know about a fun
benefit for the Waterville Operas House and for Hardy Girls Healthy Women. On July
29th at 7:30 pm the all-female a cappella group Key of She
will perform for us, and we invite you to come and enjoy their sound too!

>From Central New Jersey, the group started in 2001 and has performed
throughout the country, opened for Ray Charles and appeared on the Jane Pauley show
and opened for Ray Charles.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $7 for youth and seniors.

See you there!
