Can you help provide information on pl*y--boy

Postby Cellycel » Thu May 17, 2007 6:15 am

Hey there, there's a pl*y--boy fashion store near my home marketing 'glamerous' clothing for women. (I walked past a gross sign that said something like "Welcome to the world of pl*y--boy, a world of glamour and prestige")

I plan to print some pieces of paper with messages on them, and stick them all over the walls of the shop. Does anyone have any information I can use to show pl*y--boy is bad?

I took some quotes, and the images of the rape jokes from O.A.G, and I'm going to go find that number of how many women are trafficked into sex industries each year, and stick that up there too, with a note that if you support pr*n, you support an industry which allows women to be trafficked and raped.

Can anyone think of anything else I can use? That store will be plastered by the time I'm done with it.

(I'm not sure how I'm going to do it. The walls of the store are entirely glass, and I don't want the people inside to see me sticking up the signs, at the same time, I don't want to stick up the signs at night when they're closed because I don't want them to take them down in the morning before anyone sees them.)

I've scribbled on a few signs before, but I've done nothing on the scale of what I want to do to this store. How dare they market themselves towards women in their clothing line! Not only are they hurting us through their pr*n, they're also hurting us by trying to get us to buy their clothes and calling it 'glamerous' at the same time.

Gah!

Any tips from you pros on how to go about this?

I'm not a guy and I dislike responding to people when they refer to females and/or mixed gendered groups of people as "guys". ANWAY, please post updates... I've put "this promotes violence against women" stickers on some magazines in a bookstore at a college library, but I was very nervous while doing it. I wanna know what happened with your stickering project.

I'm sorry about the "guys" thing, I understand how it's exclusive language, though I didn't realize this, or wasn't thinking about it at the time of posting.
Won't do it again.

As for how it went? I feel terrible admitting this, but it hasn't yet. I prepared a bunch of poster type images, and I put them on my USB so I could print the posters out at university (I don't have a printer) but I've been so busy/scatterbrained that when I'm at university I don't have time to get the posters done, or I forget to bring the USB. I feel really, really... I don't know. Silly? I don't have the vocab to describe it.

Seeing your post makes me affirm that I'll make time to print the posters out after my exam tomorrow.

Sorry that I don't have anything more to report.

I love how people on this board react positively to constructive criticism. You're great Cellycel! :love2:

Well, your criticism was reasonable, intelligent and correct how could I argue with that, or refuse to take it on board? <3

I have printed out the posters, I have six posters with two copies of each. I plan to put six on the store at around 2:00am tonight, and the others on billboards around the place, so that if they take the signs off first thing in the morning, there'll still be the other signs around.

I scoped the place out, there's one security camera I need to be aware of, and also the store is right near a police station.
I live in an area full of clubs and drinking places so the police are out at all times If they catch me they'll prolly just ask me to take down the signs but it's something I (naturally) don't want to have to deal with anyway.

I'm thinking about ways of putting them up quickly, like pre attatching the tape to two of them, holding one in each hand and slapping them on quickly, going back to my space with tape (maybe my house?) and doing it again, and then again once more. Then I'm on the site for not very long.

That's the plan anyway. I guess I'll tell you tomorrow how it goes down.

And your sickers are great OAG. When I have money to buy shirts, I imagine I might do just that. I'd get either the "One Angry Girl" shirt, or the "Well behaved women rarely make history" one, because those two are my favourites.

(My housemate looked at my posters and started reading them when he was with me at university. He asked me what they were all about, and I told him. If he thought I was a reactionary feminist before this, not the idea is firmly planted in his head. I think he considers this a negative thing by the look he pulled, but he's being respectful about it.)

*Edit - Whoops. I wrote 'guys' in this post to address people. AGAIN. I edited it out. Damn habits, I'll get over it. <3

Here's how it went down:

I left my house with 11 of the 12 posters (It seems I lost one.)
The first thing we did was paper lightpoles, my housemate drove me around to "good" lightpoles. (i.e one was on a busy intersection, another at a bus stop etc.) I prepared the posters to be taped while in the car, darted out and taped them to the poles, then darted back into the car, as we moved on to the next one. Most of these were a block away from the store. (It's a busy block.)

Then we went to the store. My housemate drove me up to the side which I had sussed out I needed to enter from to avoid being seen by the security camera, but they had a metal roller door covering that entrance, which totally took me by surprise.
I walked around to the other side of the alley, figuring I could just cover my head for the camera, but there was this giant police paddy wagon sitting there, and a man in what looked like an office suit sitting in the alley, looking at the store. (I don't know who he was, or what he was doing there.) so I chickened out of putting them on the store, and put some more posters on closer lightpoles.

I drew a little diagram in case my description of the street doesn't make sense. I'm not too great at describing things clearly I don't think.

Not to scale. <3333

I still have three posters, because my guess is that the roller door comes down when the big shopping centre closes and perhaps the playboy store closes before the shopping centre does. I might try again at like 10:00pm tomorrow night (Though at that time the street would be really busy I imagine :( )

Before I went out, I was feeling really tense, I wrote a blog entry to describe it, if you're interested in that: http://is-power.blogspot.com

While I was out there though, I didn't feel that bad, there was maybe a little adreneline but otherwise I was just being all methodical.

There we go, that's the description of my first attempt of activism. (I don't think my scribbling on offensive signs counts you see.)

I guess I'll put what I've written here in my blog. *nods*

Down with glamour. Down with pl*yboy! This cute website (http://www.stickersisters.com) uses the slogan "action not glamour" and I like it much. I'm glad srini supports the antiporn cause.

OAG - I don't really think I should be spending money on stickers right now (on a sort of related note, for the past week I've been eating pasta, homebrand sauce and cheese my boyfriend somehow aquired from work. (It may or may not have been stolen, I'm not asking.) The pasta costs $1, the sauce costs $1.50, and one packet of the pasta and one bottle of sauce can feed the both of us for two days! Despite all this, I'm about to go and buy myself some sushi, because damn it, I want it.)

However I should be good for money in a few weeks time, and I might get some stickers then, as I looked around I realized there were bunches of people who put stickers on the streetsigns, the jesus loves you stickers, stickers advertising bands etc. The pieces of paper were mostly all torn on unless stickytaped really well, and the stickers were (mostly) still there, plus stickers seem easier... faster to apply.

@bluecoat: I used the phrase "Playboy - yours is not a world of glamour, it is a world of glorifed abuse" or something of that nature... I don't remember the exact words now.

"Action not glamour" is great!

Thankyou Deedle and Delphyne <3
