question about stripping, India, USA

Postby sam » Mon Nov 06, 2006 2:27 pm

I got an email today from a woman named Nancy who asks the following question:

I'm trying to understand the issue of strippers and I'm getting to know positive as well as negative attitudes about the industry...can u tell me more about the laws in this country on strip clubs?

I replied:

Would that it were that easy. Laws on SOBs (sexually oriented businesses) vary not only from state to state but from county to county in many instances. There's a book's worth of detail in any attempt to gather all the varying regulations and their varying levels of enforcement.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I suggest if you're looking towards a specific state or locale that you investigate them through the government agency in charge of such things for where you're looking. Personally, I take a big picture view of SOBs as they operate around the world so the particulars of state-by-state breakdowns matter less to me than researching the pornstitution industries as a whole and their effects on families, communities, and Class Women as a whole.

Now comes the reply from Nancy I hope some you might be able to assist with:

I'm looking at Texas, Dallas although, i completely agree that its a reality in any part of the world even in India where i come from where it exists at a level much cheaper and worse...i m trying to understand if indian
immigrant/ illegal immigrants are found in these strip clubs and the industry in general...if u can throw some light on it, i shall be really grateful.

Whatever you can contribute would be appreciated.

Indian immigrants as in strippers? Or immigrants as in male clients?

Yes, you can find both. Especially up here in Toronto.

I know cause I will hear the occassional gleeful responses from Indian guys who joke about how they saw a brown stripper at a club. Of course, sometimes it is a south american woman who is trying to 'pass' as a south asian woman in order to retain south asian male clients. It's interesting cause these guys will talk to the brown strippers and find out 'devi' is really maria...

1) Concentration of South asian diaspora is the highest in Toronto outside of anywhere in the 'industrialized world'.
2) Many sex workers in Toronto come from South america and eastern europe...

I could find out 'details' for you sam, but it would require a lot of pain on my part. I've abstained from hearing this shit from male 'friends' for a while.

And in terms of clients - yes, and it pisses me off to no degree. Also that the 'multi-cultural' rhetoric is often applied in Toronto to the whole strip-club hopping experience. I.e. "Poor, immigrant men who need company in a new world"... I live in the vicinity of 4 of the largest TO strip clubs and happen to walk past my 'brothers' getting into/out of these places.

A very dear pro-feminist friend of mine (convert to feminism because of yours truly!!!) lived with such men not by choice and would relay how they would often try to draw him into it. "These white women are so cheap, you might as well enjoy it".

I could go on and on, but in these discussions I sometimes worry about 'internalized racism' coming out... cause us minorities just end up scrutinizing our own more than we do the white man! Like, I guess it irks me 'more' to see my own out at a strip club than it does when I see white men (cause I just expect white men to be that way - whereas I unfairly have 'higher' expectations from people of my own background. At the end of the day - that should be irrelevant...)

bleah.

oh yeah... regarding 'illegal immigrants' - she might want to look at some cases of business fronts for getting illegal immigrants in from india for 'business' purposes. It's never implicit that women come for sex work though. There have been a few recent cases in Cali and NYC I think.

There was this famous pop-star who was recently arrested for trafficking immigrants as part of his dance troupe - his name was Daler Mehndi... she's probably familiar with that case. I don't know if he trafficked women for sex work though.
