Thai Women Lured To Prostitution In Japan

Over 5,000 Thai women have been lured into prostitution in Japan through promises of foreign marriages, the Bangkok Post said Friday.

Women and girls are recruited through advertisements seeking wives for foreign men and promising interesting lives overseas, Colonel Chamnan Ruadrew, Chiang Mai Provincial Police Division vice-commander, said Thursday.

When the women arrive at their destinations, they find dramatically different conditions, he said. Many are forced into brothels.

The largest number of victims end up in Japan, he said.

Chamnan was speaking at a seminar on human trafficking attended by Thai police, government officers, and local and international non-governmental organizations.

Citing police records, speakers at the seminar revealed that young girls, especially those of tribal minority ethnic groups, are most easily lured into the traps of human traffickers.

The panelists appealed for harsher legal measures against human trafficking rings and more efficient procedures to help the victims.
