“Sex Slaves” is a disturbing episode focusing (with a hidden camera) on the trafficking of women for prostitution in Moldova, Ukraine and Turkey; and one man's search for his wife, who was sold by an acquaintance.

I caught a half hour of this program last night. To say it's "disturbing" is an understatement. Try to watch this program if it airs in your area.

I'd like to see an examination of johns. Who are they? How do they defend what they support?

Did they do any of that in this one?

No, SaltyC, they didn't. But they weren't kind about the pimp or the john's, either. And there was not victim blaming, no contempt for the sex slaves.

I was reading some of the letters to Frontline and came across this one. If I weren't a hetero, I think I would have fallen in love with this lady.

Dear FRONTLINE,

It is so cathartic for us Americans to feel that we are the world's saviors, taking the moral high ground, rushing to the rescue. Yes, this is a terrible, terrible problem. But the problem also exists in "our beloved U.S."

What about the 15,000 women and young girls (not teenagers--girls) who are trafficked into sex slavery in the U.S. every year and being pimped out of surburban houses and city apartments where they are forced to live under subhuman conditions and service 10-15 men daily? Why don't you show your viewers who is fing those women and girls? Too close for comfort? Project it on the third world.

Not surprisingly, a number of men wrote Frontline to tell them that the sex slave story is a ruse. Some suspect the women of duping Frontline. Others accuse Frontline of making it up. Their denial is so strong that I suspect those men of having used sex slaves or of having wanted to.

I remember seeing that episode a few month back. It's pretty amazing. For anyone to react by saying it had to be fake, well, I just can't identify with that at all. I can be logical about it and say it's denial, or privilege, but I cannot (will not) accept that it doesn't make an impression. If I thought that, well, I might as well throw in the towel now.
