A Disturbing REaction By An Anti-Rape Educator I Spoke To

Postby fullhumanity » Fri May 28, 2010 5:41 pm

:o  :( :wtf: :angryfire: :angryfire:

Yesterday I left 2 long messages about information on the harms of pornography including research about how boys and men's use of pornography increases their sexual agggression against girls and women and including the recent report by gender studies and sociology professor Dr.Michael Flood who explains what others have too, that this is true even for frequent users of non-violent pornography and that his report also finds that boys who use pornography are more likely to sexually harass girls .I also told her that psychiatrist Linnea Smith's site with a lot of great research on pornography harms, on the answering machine of a woman in education at The Pensylvania Coalition Against Rape in Harrisburg.

I also told her about the many universities that showed the hardcore porn video Pirates 2 and that at University of Maryland the lecture Hall was jam packed with students, lawyers, and professors who watched 30 minutes of it and that this video not only has the typical sexist woman-hating sexually objectifying dehumanizing male supremacy male dominated gender inequality
,but sexual violence such as spanking, choking, and gagging, and I told her that the blog LAist wrote that like the University of California Davis students, the UCLA students which they said included a healthy mix of men and women, even with pornography all over the internet expressed audible gasps,at seeing hardcore porn on the big screen, and that they said especially when the scenes included gagging, spanking, inserting multiple fingers, and the requiste money shot.

I told her that in 1995 they had a fact shhet on pornography harms and it's connection to rape and I had helped them with it by sending them information about it too,but they were already almost totally finished with their fact sheet by then.I got a thank you note from Catherine Geller Myers at thge time for my input of it.

I also told her that psychiatrist Linnea Smith has a great site with a lot of research on the harms of pornography and that I wrote to her back in 1994 and she sent me two huge folders full of research on pornography harms including information that Mark Wukas wrote in the Chicago Tribune March 21 1993 that back in 1989 research by psychologist Dr.James Check at York University's psychology department Toronto Canada found 29% of boys indicated that pornography was the most useful source of sex information including school.parents teachers and peers. He said that to find out what children were learning from the pornography, Check devised a questionnaire that asked under what circumstances is it OK for a boy to hold a girl down and force her to have sexual intercourse.Check found that 43# of the boys and 16% of the girls said that holding a woman down and forcing sexual intercourse is at least maybe OK if she gets him sexually excited. His findings also found that one third of 14-year old boys and 2% of girls watch video pornography regularly.

I also told her about Robert Jensen's great important book,Getting Off:Pornography And The End Of Masculinity and about anti-sexist anti-male violence educator Jackson Katz's important great book,The Macho Paradox:How Some Men Hurt Women and All Men can help and I told her he also has chapters on the harms of pornography and it sexializes men's power, woman hatred and dehumanizes and sexually objectifies women.

Feminist anti-porn educator Sociologist Dr.Gail Dines said that many of her female students told her that their boyfriends are constantly pressuring them to the things they see in pornography, that they have seen it in the pornograohy and now they want to experience it in real life. She said that many young women are so desperate to have a man in their lives that they will often give in and do these things even though their instincts are telling them don't do it.

Dr.Chyng Sun also reports that many women have told her that their boyfriends and husbands are constantly asking them to the things they have seen in pornography and they don't want to.On quite a few message boards over the years I have seen posts by men asking women if they like to have or will let their boyfriends or husbands cum on their faces like they do in the porn videos and posts and topics by women who say their boyfriends and husbands are wanting to ejaculate on their faces like they do in the porn and they feel it's disgusting and degrading and don't want them to do it.

This young woman from The Penn Coalition Against rape called me this morning and I told her all of this on the phone and more, all she said was that she wasn't surprised that college students would be watching pornography at the universities given that their population is college students. She didn't say how terrible, and distturbing when I told her specifically about the gagging, spanking, and choking in the video! I told her that I was treated as a sex object repeatedly by boys and men because of pornography and that I was a beautiful big busted teen girl, and was molested by teen boys who used softcore porn back in 1970, and I should have told her, although I don't think it would have made much difference, that one of these boys shoved a pornographic magazine into my face and said, here is a picture of a girl fingering herself, and the other boy made two references to the Playboy centerfolds to me.

I told her that sadly and disturbingly many women are now influenced to support pornography because it's been normalized and mainstreamed in the male dominated sexist woman-hating society, and as psychologist Robert Brannon(and also John Stoltenberg author of the great important book Refusing To Be A Man,Jackson Katz,Robert Jensen etc,) who was the co-chair of the New York National Organization For Women New York State Task force on Pornography and Prostitution since 1990,said for many, men pornography makes sexism sexy, and he said this a term that most people know and are familar with, and it's an important and contuining area of feminist concern.I said to her that sadly it makes sexism sexy for many women now too.And she said that it's all part of rauch culture that some women see it as empowering.I said it's insane, would anyone say that racist pornography is empowering for blacks or anti-semetic pornography is empowering for Jews?

She said she didn't say she really agrees with it.She also said I don't neccessarily disagree with my points about the Pirates 2 video, and I got very upset and I said you don't necessarily disagree with my points about not only a hardcore porn video but one that has sexual violence such as gagging, spanking, and choking in it? I said how can you just say you don't necessarily disagree? She said there is no point in discussing or debating this any further, and she said I could send her my information by email because I asked if I could but I got upset and angry and I yelled, you should have said it's horrible, disturbing and outrageous! and I hung up on her.

She told me that they do have research information there about the connections of pornography and sexual violence. When I told her that past president of New York Now Marylin Fitterman had said she is pro-prostituition,she said that's crazy.I once spoke with a woman in education at The Penn Coalition Against Rape around 1997 or so and I said rape comes from most men's and the whole male dominated society's irrational hatred of women, and she actually said, that she wouldn't exactly use the word hatred. I wrote about this to Laura Kuhn who was the diector of The Media Action Alliance then and who had sent me a very good article she wrote called,Exposing A Woman Hating Culture which included a lot on pornography, and Laura wrote back and said how that woman and so many are in denial!

This is what we are fighting up against and it really seems hopless and it's very depressing and disturbing!
If there was a 12 billion $ industry portraying blacks, and Jews to Whites and German and Christians as just sex objects to use for them, calling them hateful names, nobody would say it's liberating for them! Nor would it be so acceptable and mainstreamed!

yeah there's plenty of people who are against violence against women but who don't really critique the commodification of sex and who don't take seriously the connection between porn culture and sexual violence. I felt really betrayed by some people a few years ago regarding that.. but I've been exposed to so much lately within progressive circles that honestly nothing surprises me anymore.
