Anderson Cooper report: "War Against Women"

Postby bluecoat28 » Sat Jan 12, 2008 9:11 pm

Dear Friend of the IRC,

Please mark your calendar and set your video recorder:

This Sunday, January 13th, 60 Minutes is scheduled to feature a
report by Anderson Cooper on Congo's war against women.
60
Minutes airs on CBS at 7pm ET/PT.
For more information about the
broadcast, please visit:

http://www.cbsnews .com/stories/1998/07/08/60minutes/main13502.shtml

International Rescue Committee staff members in New York and
Congo worked closely with 60 Minutes on this segment, providing
background information, logistical assistance and arranging
interviews.

The IRC works across Congo to meet urgent humanitarian needs,
revive basic services interrupted by the long civil war, and
help communities to generate long-term solutions to the problems
of poverty and violence. The IRC has extensive programs in Congo
that assist survivors of rape and help communities to prevent
and respond to sexual assaults. We have been providing
lifesaving aid in Congo since 1996, and we are one of the
largest humanitarian actors there.

We hope you tune in to 60 Minutes this Sunday.

Thank you,

International Rescue Committee

WAR AGAINST WOMEN - The civil war in Congo is an ethnic conflict, but gender has become a crucial factor, too, as women are bearing the brunt of one of the horrible weapons used in the war: rape. CNN's Anderson Cooper reports. Michael Gavshon and Drew Magratten are the producers.

Cooper did a story on this a few months ago on CNN. It was buried on the daily schedule (his show is in primetime, but I digress), and it was around 1230am that I saw it. It was absolutely mortifying to watch and hear the stories that these women have to tell. What men have done to them is the ultimate depravity in humanity.
Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood once asked a male friend why men feel threatened by women. He replied: "They are afraid women will laugh at them." She then asked a group of women why they felt threatened by men. They answered: "We're afraid of being killed."

I meant to watch this tonight, but I was out.

This is SUCH an important issue, and I feel there has hardly been any awareness raised about it.Even I know next to nothing about what has been going on in the Congo, and I do my best to keep up with women's situation worldwide.

Is this show available online? Or are there any other good videos about the situation in the Congo? (Of course, writing is important too.)

thanks.
"Early on, I made a very conscious decision that women were never going to find themselves on the wrong end of my venom...I'm deeply committed to calling out male violence at its source and that source, in this world, is men. They are the perpetrators of violence, the upholders of the system, the ones who benefit from the degredation and oppression of women around the globe." --B.B.

I have had a NYT article on Congolese rape survivors on my nightstand for about two months.
I haven't been able to read it yet.
I guess some slavery feels like freedom.
