Another aquaintance off the list...

About 20 minutes ago I passed by the table of one of my Street booksellers from whom I have bought quite a few books. He had a large cardboad box full of pornography
magazines and videos right next to his table with "magaxines 2 for 3$ " and "videos 5-10$".

I told him i had a big problem with that and he thought i was being dramatic. He said that he thought he was doing a public service because without the porn the costumers may become rapists.

So much for buying books from him anymore.... Its crazy..

was it Adrienne Rich who spoke of "radical male passivity" or might this better be described as deep cynicism. make a pick.

in same line... i have p.m.ed a few sexist and pornagraphic avatars at a couple of my sports boards---with immediate success. was glad to see the agreement from the moderators.

That is great Gerry. I hope this guy misses my business and maybe the conversations, but i dont think he will. I hate the "ha ha ha" response.

What kinds of books does he sell usually? What did you mean by "Street bookseller"?

He normaly sells regular books, art, history, philosophy, whatever.

In New York City there are many street booksellers who set up tables on the sidewalk, and they are protected by the first amendment.

There are two other sellers in my neighborhood who would not sell porn. One of them is a woman.

I've heard this response in my violence against women class. If porn didn't exist, there would be more violence against women. In my opinion, porn contributes to our rape culture; it doesn't dampen it. Also, this response plays nicely into the biological determinist notion that that men 'need' sex and if they can't get it, they must objectify and exploit women in order to jerk off? Ya, riiiight.

Well, men who use these lines confess that they and their gender are nothing but animals with no choice but to fuck when they go in heat. Porn as public service: that's a step up from even free speech. Now I'll go throw up.

if rape prevents porn, does that mean that rapists just haven't discovered porn yet? and once they do, all rape will ceast to exist?
I guess some slavery feels like freedom.
