Aug. 9, 2006 — About 650,000 American teenagers have exchanged sex for money or drugs, and boys were more likely to have prostituted themselves than girls, according to the only survey ever committed to the subject.

According to the survey, published Wednesday in the Journal of Sexually Transmitted Infections, close to 4 percent of more than 13,000 U.S. teens in grades seven through 12 reported having ever exchanged sex for drugs or money.

The officers Tuesday were conducting a "proactive sting" in response to a number of complaints, said Houston police Capt. Dwayne Ready. Two vice officers had taken the suspected prostitute into custody after successfully negotiating a sexual transaction when the 15-year-old boy emerged from behind the officers.

"He began yelling and firing on the officers," Ready said.

Poverty, drugs driving kids to sell sex on street

KIDS as young as 12 are selling sex in Central in exchange for accommodation, drugs and money.

Children running away from poverty and abuse in the poorer areas of Nelson Mandela Bay, as well as those from middle class suburbs who have developed drug dependencies, are turning up in prostitution rings operating out of Central.

Police spokesman Captain Verna Brink said a number of children, some as young as 12, had been found during police raids conducted in Central over the last two weeks.

An international NGO has accused parents in Kwale District of encouraging their children to engage in prostitution.

World Vision-Kenya officials said many parents in the district encouraged their daughters to indulge in prostitution with tourists and other clients for cash.

The NGO's Coast regional manager, Steven Makanga, said exposing girls to prostitution was denying them their rights.
