Moving away from "blame" towards a new Framework..

Postby sunnysmiles » Sun Jul 23, 2006 5:21 am

I am going to suggest that we move away from "Blame" and towards a framework of "body image".

If as I have illustrated in another thread, women's body image of themselves is that of hypersexualization in just about every facet of their lives, then it would only seem appropriate to put this new infestation of pornstitution into everyday lives under 'body image'.

If we look at the increased results of porn onto women's bodies - we can see how 'boob jobs' and 'vaginoplasty' are BODY IMAGE related. But this is a new type of body image problem that is directly linked to porn.

If all you've ever seen or see is an emaciated blonde with large breasts on TV/internet/ads ala Jenny Mcarthy, jenna jameson and Pam Anderson - who else are you going to want to look like.

Accessories/clothing also 'reveal' who you are - if you wear a playboy shirt/pierce your navel/wear glitter on your body/wear very long glittery chandelier earrings (these first appeared in porn)people are going to know something about you... what they know about you - is that you might not be the sexiest girl - but you've got enough 'girl power' to show your 'best assets', and are 'proud' to show them.

This is an idea in it's preliminary stages - I don't know what the pros/cons of this framework are. I would abstain from discussing 'low self-esteem' in regards to this framework, because those too often border on blame.

Please discuss what you think about shifting this framework? Discuss what were the pros/cons of the last micro-feminist-movement when 'body image' issues were at the forefront of the feminist agenda? What problems do you foresee in this framework?

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, sunny.
Refocus on women's body image? I can't stand to think about my body for one more second. I think we focus on women's bodies enough.
I prefer to focus on blaming the patriarchy myself. That would sort of get at the root of the problem, as it were 8)

does the debate also includes the false aesthetics of the Patriarchy?
the body modification?

Sorry for not being clear enough.

Instead of looking at pornstitution as affecting only the 'victim'/'nonvictim' or 'sexworker'/'non-sexworker', when we examine it on a societal level, we might want to look at as a body image issue that affects ALL women, i.e. Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Actresses, Models, singers, women who strippercise, girls who pose as Page 3 models, women participating in 'exhibitionist lesbianism or star in girls gone wild etc...

It's just an idea to keep in mind...

because we need to perpetrate the victim all the way mentality in a way to avoid placing responsibility on them for their actions?

I can't be anymore clearer than I already have been - sorry if you've misunderstood what I've been saying Soopermouse, cause that is definitely NOT what I have been saying.

Can't do anything more for you now.

I am trying to see your point. I do agree that we need to address the barbification of the society and how it affects all women. Remember that Paris Hilton is at the moment, a monument to plastic surgery

This is where it starts...isn't it?

You've presented a very reliable link - this information is very helpful.

End of sarcasm...

Seriously, Soopermouse - Why would distributing a porn tape and getting plastic surgery done launch your career as a celebrity?

What are the factors that mitigate and facilitate this kind of stardom FOR FEMALE celebrities?

why aren't women who are radical/anti-porn feminists in the public eye? Why aren't we sheroes and celebrities?

Why do women get more praise for pussy than they do for intellect?

Feh. The thing about that plastic surgery site is young women don't look at it and think eeeuuuu I'll never do that to myself. Because of the message they get from the patriarchy they think oh that's what I do!. Look how famous and loved they all are. I'm gonna get me mine.

I'll revert to reading now. Intersting thread thank you.

Sadly, I have been reading all of Marith's blog in order to understand more about sex workers from an individual perspective.

I was wondering why throughout the whole entire bloody blog she keeps on talking about being self-conscious about her body. It's in subtle and different ways. Anyways, I thought it was relevant to this post that i made here earlier.

Men who I am having sex with make me feel like crap by coming across as interested in my personality. That is pretty much besides the point fellas, that's not where I need the validation.

Like get this, Russ is so disinterested in my breasts he never even bothers to take off my bra when we fool around. So now you know! He did tell me at one point during our trip "your ass is my favorite part of you to play with" & I said "the whole ass or my asshole?" & then because I am a real comedian I answered my own question with: "first one, then the other!" I told Carrie that he's probably like "because then I don't have to look at your face or your boobs!" It is too late to be trying to explain this! I don't care how distasteful I'm making myself appear. When we were walking into Madison Square Garden this guy leaning on a column said in a real slow drawl "some guys have all the luck" as Russ & I walked by. See, MSG guy wants to make it with me without my bra on Russ [inserted: her regular boyfriend/client], make a note ok?
