(last paragraph slightly edited 16May'06)
Delphyne, I didnt know that about Jodie or Dita.
Both of these women are just a small drop in the ocean and there are many waiting in the wings while they "recruit", with the help of the media, more like them.
I don't know if you watch BB (UK), but the last celeb one that Jodie was on, she came across as very confused about who she was (Pete Burns is another story and confuses the picture a bit lol). And Dita was on Jonathan Ross (UK chat show host -a well-known supporter of porn and self-proclaimed well- adjusted happy family man - have you seen his wife?!?) and of course Dita was made out to be the ultimate aspiration for women.
It sickens me that these types of women are the ones who mostly get all the media coverage and the way they are portayed is as if they were heroines being celebrated. They are invited onto reality shows and chat shows to show off thier boob jobs and puffed-up pouty laquered lips. It's another manipulative technique and it's no wonder that little girls take the message on board. Oh sorry, I forgot, it's the little girls' faults for having low-self esteem and low confidence. Fux sake.
I did mention in another post on another board that Jo Brand recently highlighted a poll of teenage girls - 63% had ambitions to be "glamour" models. 4% aspired to med school. Not sure about the other 33% but you get the point. Gawd almighty.
It's not the women necessarily that we are criticising, but the overall patriarchical control (sp?)culture that has developed and encouraged them into
being public wank fodder for men, and the perpetuation of the porn message and it's influence by the media. It's forcing us to accept porn as the norm, and now, children are being bombarded every day with sexually explicit images of women, and it looks like it's working, god help us.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and now we know that when Hugh got porn organised, started his empire and started preaching via his mag, that porn, prostitution and rape is a lifestyle, that it wouldn't just stop there. It's been slowly but surely filtered into mainstream consciousness, with some false starts and quite a few fights, but it seems they are winning. It's out of control due to technology and it's going to get worse before it gets better.
(boyfriend looking over my shoulder and saying) "there there dear, don't get yourself so worked up, you'll have another one of your "episodes" - here have this pill and go lie down for awhile - you look so much prettier when you're calm and happy & you should smile more - activism is so umfeminine and men don't like it. Now, if you want to be a spice girl-type feminist, that's different- that's fine, as long as you you're not sporty or scary. Posh is good, "baby" is better and "ginger" wow, those tits- now, that's my kind of feminist- yeah I love that girl-power stuff - or you could be daisy (DD) duke- now there's a feisty little role-model if ever I saw one. Or how 'bout Mariah? She had a boob job as part of her breakdown recovery process and called her new cd 'emancipation of mimi'! I love watching her acting like a pornstar/lapdancer for snoop in her vidoes -what a liberated lady - these ladies are always smiley and happy, so stop being whiney and jealous".
(Me) "Oh, ok then honey, pill is working now - I'll stop now. Don't want to be hated by men do I? How could I forget I exist only for them? Can you please make my botox appointment for freezing my face into a permanently acceptable feature for men to admire, even though I'm often angry as hell - although I try and try to be calm and accepting? Will that help? That would be so nice of you darling. It will be a start and then you can pay for new flubber fun-bags for you to play with on my chest- but maybe I will win the "win a boob job for your girlfriend" competition in your zoo magazine (yes really) and you won't have to pay a thing - what? I have to pay for the boobs too, on top of my hair extensions, regular manicures, make-up, gym membership and sexy underwear? -oh but it's for my confidence you know- and all part of the fun of being a girl yippee!" - (sings favorite song- "I'm a barbie girl in a barbie world, made of plastic, it's fantastic - you can brush my hair, undress me anywhere......").
Sorry people - went off on one there - please humor me.
