BBC2 last night - Beauty Backlash

Did anyone catch the whole of this program? I caught half of it but did manage to see a bit where Dove (yeah I know, it's unilever) are sponsoring reps from an eating disorder organisation to go around schools and educate mixed gender classes about how images in media are unrealistic. It triggered a ray of hope in me that has been absent for some time.

I know there is another thread on here somewhere (I think it's the mitchum man topic - grabs puke bucket), that says Dove is a division of the same company (unilever) as mitchum, which seems like a conflict of interest on their part - they seem to be pushing in one direction and pulling in another.

Seems like a twisted marketing ploy on the part of Dove, second guessing a future backlash (rightly) about all of the media pressure on women to look like these artificial images, but still, this is much better than nothing.

Also, I noticed that the new ad from Loreal for their new face cream for mature women, has Jane Fonda as the face for this new high-profile promotion. Now this could be looked at in 2 ways - a) yay, they are daring to use and show an older woman for advertising a face cream, but b) JFonda has had umpteen cosmetic surgery ops (face-lifts, and had a rib removed to flatten her tum), has money coming out of those well-preserved ears to keep herself looking good, and so no wonder she looks good for her age. But we are supposed to believe than one little jar of loreal cream is going to acheive the same effect as JF's surgically-interfered with youthful glowing, smiling, enthusiastic "don't I look kick-ass good for 63" enthusiasm?

they did stress, when this point was raised, that Dove stayed out of the picture and was not mentioned, and that in no way were they trying to sneak in any marketing. It did look that way, at least from what I saw last night. I would like to see the program again. But as I said, at least someone is doing something as opposed to fuck all.
